Abstract

The current literature of school education, transnationalisation and migration explores the links between migrants’ home countries and the receiving countries and the simultaneous ‘here and there’ (Vertovec 1999), which migrant pupils and their parents experience. Although authors discuss actors, structures and social mechanisms, they tend to focus on these analytical levels separately. This article advocates a more explicit analysis of the interconnections of structures, actors and mechanisms, in order to understand more fully the processes relating to transnationalisation within school education. On the basis of Bunge’s systemic model a conceptual framework is presented, which addresses the interconnections between actors, structures and social mechanisms within and across schools and wider national and international levels in the context of transnationalisation of school education. The article adds to the theoretical discussion of transnationalisation and school education by presenting a conceptual tool, which identifies gaps in the current literature and may help to structure future research and policy development.
