Romantic radicalism in the sciences and engineering

conference contribution
posted on 2023-07-26, 13:43 authored by John Gardner
This paper to around 30 people concentrated on the importance of Engineering publications as carriers of political ideas after the newspaper clampdown in 1819. The Six Acts had stated that any paper referring to any item of Church or State could now not be sold for a sum less than 6d. As radical and reforming newspapers then went out of business Engineering publications, often selling for half of that price, began to carry articles and letters on education, politics and class between articles on engineering matters like improving the efficiency of steam engines and plans for new road surfaces.
