Abstract

The struggle for survival by Gypsies in Britain is introduced in this sociological perspective that includes a look at government policy and the discrimination that follows gypsy caravans. With a full description of the Gypsies and Travellers' historical origins and current community groups, this text explores their complex relationship with British society, from dealing with local authorities and human rights issues to moving into permanent brick-and-mortar residency and seeking representation in local and national governments.
