Abstract

Staff absence is a problem that can and must be managed. What managers need are sound policies and procedures to address the problems caused by absent employees and the tools to combat workplace absenteeism with confidence. The differences in levels of absence between employers, industries, regions, sectors of the economy and, indeed, between countries indicate that absenteeism is based as much in cultural and social attitudes as it is in health and fitness.
